Reflections on the Writer’s Journey Book One Part 4

The refusal of the call

Uncomfortable.  Leaving the nest and stepping into the unknown. The hero is torn between the comfort of his life and the excitement of the promise of adventure and discovery. Like a baby being waned off its mother’s milk, the hero resists. He is scared.

He refuses, and returns to his world. Something has happened. The world he thought was safe no longer is. The destruction and tearing apart has made it clear his world is no longer comfortable, and he must go on the journey.

The call, initially refused, is accepted. Yet, inside, he still harbors reluctance. Disbelief that his world is in fact changed. The anchor that he thought he had, is broken. It is this realization that leads to the acceptance of the call, his fate now accepted.

He steps forward and into the road of the unknown with a renewed energy.
